This study reviews the components essential for the operation of an assessment center for identifying managerial potential. The paper consists of five sections: in the first, the assessment center is defined and described and its historical development is delineated. The following section discusses the four main components of a center, including: the identification of the dimensions to be evaluated; the evaluation techniques to be employed in the center; the selection and training of the assessors; and finally, the organizational climate needed for successful operation. The third section reviews the literature which has evaluated the reliability and the validity of the assessment center technique. The fourth section offers insights into these research conclusions and suggests future applications. Finally, the last part provides guidelines for overcoming some of the obstacles encountered by those Israeli organizations that have either experimented with, or employed, assessment centers.
