Abstract

For the positivist, the birth process of Tel-Aviv can be depicted by means of statistical data, maps and aerial photographs. For the humanist, the beginnings of the urban environ are perceived as an encounter between man and the changing landscape - an encounter evoking feelings and a world of symbols which can be passed on to coming generations through painting, sketching or literary description. The media of poetry and art often make it possible to catch glimpses of a vanished world. Such is the case of the work of N. Guttman and N. Alterman who faithfully produce a retrospective view of scenes from the past. Both artists reveal the "hidden dimension" of the change from historical jaffa to the then modern Tel-Aviv and the transformation from a casual cluster of buildings into a full-fledged city.
