Abstract

This paper reviews evidence relating to the classical Parsonian model of the sick role in which empirical variations are found on every dimension: motivation, role exemption, conditonal legitimation and participation in treatment. A typology of illness roles is then constructed including: acute, chronic, terminal illness and disability. The contribution of social work in these circumstances is then illustrated and evaluated in relation to three cases. The authors conclude the paper with a brief comparison of social work and sociology theories and make some suggestions for further empirical and theoretical work in this field.
