Abstract

A type of coin known till now only from two worn specimens can be better understood on base of two examples in the possession of the author. The Reverse shows two columns and a pediment, from which something is hanging down. To the left is the Emperor and to the right the Goddess of Victory crowning a man seated naked on the ground. The above scene most probably refers to an event from the life of Agrippa as described by Josephus. Agrippa had become prisoner but was set free by the Emperor Claudius who gave him a golden chain of the same weight as the iron chain with which he had been fettered. The chain was appended in the Temple as a memorial. On the coin, which refers to the liberation of the king, we see Agrippa naked, as was customary to represent prisoners, being crowned in the presence of the Emperor. It is not unlikely that the object hanging down from the pediment is the golden chain presented to the king.
