In this note we show that a general underestimation of the social cost of monopoly exists in the literature. This is so because the concept of producer surplus is not well understood. The main conclusion arrived in this note is that the existence of producer surplus and a monopoly-monopsony situation should not be analyzed separately, and that this situation implies a particular incentive to vertical integration by monopolies.
