Abstract

This study is an ex post facto description of the performance of 300 students classified as educable mentally handicapped in the State of Florida. Data was collected on the students initial effort to pass the State Student Assessment Test, Part II (SSAT-II). This assessment evaluates the practical application of specified minimum performance standards in reading, writing, and mathematics enabling students to receive a Standard State of Florida Diploma. The findings indicate that students classified as educable mentally handicapped fared significantly poorer than did other students. More precisely, these students scored lower on the skills included in the SSAT-II and were less likely to attain the required level of mastery prior to graduation.
