Abstract

Two recent studies are examined which try to analyze new tendencies in adolescent personality structures by way of combining advanced socialization theory and a political-economical analysis of present capitalism. Ziehe's analysis outlines a "new socialization type"; this type and its explanation is refuted as a false generalization derived from certain therapeutical data. Döbert/Nunner-Winkler's research is valued as an important contribution to the solution of certain fundamental problems of socialization theory. It is argued, however, (1) that its macrosociological trend hypothesis of an increasing intensity of adolescence is not very well founded; (2) that it does not offer any conception as to adolescence in working-class youth; and (3) that it applies socialization theory to concrete socialization processes in a methodologically dubious, non-hermeneutical way. Consequently, both studies fail to discuss the actual social-psychological problems of the majority of young people in our society adequately.
