Abstract

Enlightenment for the masses? Possibilities and limits of mass-media in the process of the constitution of political consciousness. Elements of a critical media-theory. In connection to different practical problems, the concept of enlightenment has become relevant again the ideas of the new left, still used in the early-bourgois tradition with an elite-theory approach. That's quite the same as it is already delivered in the early socialdemocratic (Kautsky) and leninistic theory of the party. This approach is criticized on the base of a critical media-theory, which develops as its main points the individual and collective processes of learning, seen as processes of the constitution of consciousness based on the specific situations of practical life of the subject. It is an empirical theory of the constitution of societal and political consciousness. Its main characteristics are illustrated in the analysis of mass-media in this process.
