Abstract

Analysis of gross morphology, by itself, is not sufficient to explain why frogs can maintain constant acceleration and increase jump distance with increasing size. Jumping ability is determined in part by properties of hindlimb extensor musculature that have not yet been adequately explored, such as physiological and architectural parameters. Data from this study suggest that frog morphology facilitates maintenance of constant acceleration over a large size range, and that quickness of movement is a critical parameter of the jump as a predator escape mechanism.
