Shell-crushing predation on littoral gastropods in a tropical area is experimentally shown to be greater than that in a temperate area. Increased predation pressure on the tropical gastropods is due to a guild of shell-crushing fishes found exclusively in tropical and subtropical waters. Increased predation appears to modify the activity patterns of the tropical gastropods, curtailing their foraging time and producing latitudinal differences in the feeding habits of littoral snails.
