Abstract

Due to the globalization of markets, intercultural competence has become a key qualification of expatriates. However, the ability to communicate effectively with members of foreign cultures is not measured validly in most empirical studies. Also, evidence of the effect of intercultural competence on expatriate success using a comprehensive model is still missing. This study contributes toward filling this void. A structural equation model with multi-criteria measures for both constructs was tested in a pilot study using the self-assessments of German students who had concluded an overseas assignment. Overall, the study reflected a significant impact of intercultural competence on success overseas. The conclusion of this study is that HRM managers should use the components of intercultural competence as «soft» criteria for international employee selection and personnel development.
