Abstract

The essay describes Spinoza's conception of Judaism and its decisive influence on the perception of Judaism as it developed within the mainstream of European Enlightenment. Spinoza's conception of Judaism is depicted within the broader context of his general philosophy. Without blurring the existing differencies, special attention is paid to parallels between Spinoza's philosophical version of a negative attitude towards Judaism and its religious Christian antecedent. These parallels facilitated its reception among Christian Enlightenment thinkers, who revised European thinking in nearly every realm, but — strangely enough — accepted overwhelmingly Spinoza's secular brand of Anti-Judaism which was leaning heavily on classical and nearly undisputed Christian motives.
