The length of the extension zone of stage I sporangiophores of Phycomyces blakesleeanus was determined from measurements of the apical region which responded phototropically to unilateral illumination; the extension zone varied in length from 50 to 950 μ m. A significant relationship was observed between extension zone length and growth rate. The length of the extension zone of the sporangiophores could also be determined by measuring the length of the tapered region of their tips.
