Abstract

The original internal passive of the qal conjugation was the light puʿal conjugation (whose second radical was at first not geminated). Besides the regular "n" reflexive conjugation of the qal conjugation — the nifʿal — there is a known example of a verb belonging to a "t" reflexive conjugation of the qal — the light hitpaʿel (with no gemination of the second radical, and a qameṣ in the first radical): התפקד. Most lexicographers and grammarians have overlooked another verb belonging to this conjugation in biblical Hebrew: התרחצתי (Job 9:30). Thus there is in biblical Hebrew the common, regular qal verb (רחץ), its passive (light puʿal) verb (רחץ — twice in the Bible), and its "t" reflexive (light hitpaʿel) verb (התרחץ).
