Abstract

Bruno's self-defence in front of the Roman Inquisition was conducted with great skill and constant recourse to theological learning. Nevertheless, with regard to the issues of the Incarnation and 'extraordinary generation', modern interpreters of the trial records have found his defence to be hesitant and even unorthodox. In fact, however, Bruno had to draw on authoritative evidence rooted in the best theological and juridical traditions, above all Thomas Aquinas's Quaestiones quodlibetales and Martín de Azpilcueta's Consilia. This interpretation may shed new light on the contradiction between his conviction and the vote of the advisers of the Holy Office, which in large measure supported his innocence.
