The construction and operation of a mini-monolith cutter is presented. The apparatus will allow the extraction of accurate volumes of peats and sediments for absolute pollen techniques, or cut thin sections for fine resolution analysis. The design ensures a minimum amount of compression or contamination. The overall error of the machine is 4.6%.
