Abstract

In this article, the author studies the contemporary evolution of African food beliefs and interdictions. He denounces the implicit condescension with which traditional food is regarded in developing countries in the light of the gains, however fragile, of modern nutritional science. He then describes the current food situation in Africa and the materialistic influences brought to bear on it by the steamroller effect of modern technology and hedonistic feeding habits. Finally, he asks questions about cultural authenticity and food symbolism and examines the relationship between food and social organization under different aspects.
