Meiosis in S. octosporus is described and the chromosome complement in this organism is characterized for the first time. Photographic evidence is presented illustrating the sexual fusion of two nuclei and the ensuing events which normally lead to the formation of eight ascospores. The haploid chromosome number is shown to be 4. The nucleus and the vacuole are shown to be separate and distinct entities, and a persistently-staining centriole is shown to be associated with the former structure. The nuclear structure and reproductional processes in this yeast follow, in general, the pattern described in higher ascomycetes.
