The haploid chromosome number of Venturia inaequalis is seven. Synapsis occurs in the young ascus between short chromosomes before maximum extension is reached. No significant change in the shape or size of the ascus occurs during the period between full pachytene and the uninucleate spore stage. A preliminary count of V. pirina also gave a haploid chromosome number of seven.
