Abstract

The paper raises the following theoretical problems: which new institutional forms will supplement or integrate the classic nation-state forms in regulating the evolving economic organization? How the gap between new economic organization forms and nationally-centralized political forms of regulation will be «treated» and possibly reduced? The paper suggests that the state will increasingly share its prerogatives with both supra- and sub-national «competitors», and will leave a substantial scope to network forms of organization. Regional economies and global firms as complementary dimensions vis a vis nation-state are discussed. Rational choice theories and network theories of the state and of the region are then revisited and confronted. Historical account of intercity network systems as prototype of current network organization is sketched. A new theoretical approach concerning the transition from economy of scale and scope to network economies is finally proposed.
