Abstract

Potential sites for the origin of lateral roots are influenced by the position of the previously established lateral. Distribution studies conducted on six monocot species consistently show lateral roots organized in a nonrandom, dispersed pattern. Further measurements indicate a three-dimensional zone of suppression near lateral root positions.
