Several chromosomal biotypes of Adhatoda vasica Nees were encountered in a cytological investigation of different collections from eastern India. All of these chromosomal biotypes represent distinct patterns of branching of the petiole bundles. Various measurements and countings indicate a direct quantitative relationship between the total chromosome length of the biotypes and the number of xylem cells per unit of cross-sectional area and a very strong inverse relation between the total chromosome length and the diameters of vessels and sieve tubes.
