Certain small bogs in morainic depressions in the Itasca Park area have acquired moats as the water table has risen since the drought conditions of the 1930's. The development of the moat appears to have been accompanied by a vigorous growth of sphagnum-heath bog in place of a sedge-dominated floating mat.
