Abstract

The factors involved in the creation of leachate and possible measures to control the production of leachate or its treatment in those cases where it cannot be eliminated are considered. It is concluded that the most feasible leachate control measure is to divert groundwater and surface water from the site and to use cover material that will control and minimize infiltration and percolation to the refuse. In conjunction with this, controlled gas venting to the atmosphere must be included in the design if lateral movement of methane and carbon dioxide into the surrounding soil is to be prevented. The use and importance of a high transpiration cover crop is also discussed. There are many areas in which research is necessary either to define the problems or to provide economical and feasible solutions to the known problems.
