Abstract

In a wastewater denitrification pilot plant utilizing methanol, microbial interaction between Vibrio extorquens, a nondenitrifying methanol oxidizer, and Pseudomonas stutzeri, a denitrifier incapable of utilizing methanol, was responsible for the denitrification. V. extorquens produces citrate and a long-chain hydrocarbon, and the citrate is then a carbon source for denitrification by P. stutzeri. The bacteria have similar maximum growth rates. The mixed culture removed 240 mg ${\rm NO}_{3}{}^{\text{-}}\text{-}{\rm N}/{\rm l}$ at 11 minutes residence time. The same extracellular products were found in the culture of methane-oxidizer isolated from the pilot plant. When this methane-oxidizer was grown with denitrifier with methane as a carbon source, 90 mg ${\rm NO}_{3}{}^{\text{-}}\text{-}{\rm N}/{\rm l}$ were removed consistently at a residence time of 5 days.
