Abstract

A new methodology for calculating solids production from activated sludge processes treating complex wastewaters is presented. The new methodology represents a refinement of traditional procedures and was developed from a conceptual framework that traces the disposition of soluble and particulate components of influent wastewater through the activated sludge process. Use of the refined technique to predict sludge production characteristics for a high-purity oxygen pilot activated sludge system yielded a mean deviation between calculated and measured values equal to 7.0 to 8.5%. Applied biochemical oxygen demand loadings varied between 0.6 and 3.1 kg 5-day biochemical oxygen demand per kilogram mixed liquor volatile suspended solids per day. The refined methodology was also used to illustrate the sensitivity of sludge production and solids retention time calculations to changes in influent waste composition.
