Ammonia Nitrogen Removal in Facultative Wastewater Stabilization Ponds

Abstract

Ammonia-N removal data were analyzed for three facultative wastewater stabilization ponds located in similar geographical locations. A statistically significant relationship was developed based on the theoretical ammonia stripping model. The model was found to be a function of pH value, temperature, and hydraulic loading rate. As the pH value, temperature, and hydraulic loading rate increased, ammonia-N removal increased. The equations developed using the data from the three lagoons were verified with other performance data, and the relationships seem to be applicable to predicting the ammonia-N performance of facultative ponds.
