Abstract

In Plato's "Gorgias" the title character is parodied at a level of detail that has not yet been recognized. Socrates employs a specific rhetorical technique (polyptoton) associated with the historical Gorgias in order to defeat him in the debate. By doing so, Plato critiques both this technique and Gorgias' rhetorical mode of argumentation more generally.
