Abstract

Ejection of living larvae from the nests of several Bombus species has been observed following ${\rm CO}_{2}$ narcosis of whole colonies. An experiment is described which demonstrates that ${\rm CO}_{2}$ narcosis triggers larval ejection in B. terrestris (L.) by modifying adult worker behavior even when the larvae themselves are not exposed to ${\rm CO}_{2}$. Handling techniques to obviate the necessity for anaesthesia are reported.
