Recent papers have discussed the implications of a multifactorial model for the inheritance of disease. The risk of disease is assumed to be a function of some underlying variable that is influenced by both genotype and environment. The values of the underlying variable for relatives are assumed to be correlated. These papers have estimated the risks to individuals when the incidence of the disease among some of their relatives is known. The nature of the underlying variable is generally unknown and therefore its value not available. Values of a character correlated with the underlying variable may be available. In this paper, the estimated disease risk for an individual is derived when the value of this correlated character is available either for the individual or for a single relative or for both. Numerical examples are given and the assumptions necessary for the validity of the method presented.
