Satterthwaite's approximation for the distribution of a contrast on group means is known to be robust under heterogeneity of within group variances. By combining orthonormal contrasts, one-way and two-way analysis of variance statistics are derived. For comparing several means a multiple comparisons test procedure is proposed.
