The stochastic compartmental model of Matis and Hartley is generalized to allow the transition rates governing the movement of particles between the compartments to be time-dependent, and resulting generalizations of many of their results are given. A recent study of some anatomical data involving a time-dependent compartmental analysis where the transition rates are built up as step functions over time is then briefly discussed.
