Abstract

The view that sixteenth century Spain was a monolithic and persecuting society must be disputed on the basis on an investigation of a number of elements of dissent present in Spanish society. Opposition to the use of violence in matters of religion reveals a commitment to pluralism little recognized in most scholarship on Spain.
