Abstract

Focussing on "Ithaca," this essay considers the function of the mathematical sciences in Ulysses. Bloom's association with the novel's scientific motifs distinguishes his attitude towards experience from Stephen's subjectivism and uncertainty. The astronomical and mathematical references which serve to illustrate the continuity of the "cosms," imply a sense of certainty in an ordered world. This leads to science functioning as myth, fulfilling Campbell's tenets for a creative mythology.
