Abstract

A brief history of the modern library movement and the development of library education in China is presented, including a historical review of the Boone Library School and other library training programs before 1949; an account of the change of philosophy in librarianship and the incorporation of political ideology in library functions after the establishment of the People's Republic of China; and a description of the different training programs the Chinese government launched to cope with the severe shortage of library personnel due to the phenomenal growth of public libraries. Finally, the expansion of library education after the cultural revolution and possible future developments of library modernization are discussed.
