Evaluation of Citrus Pulp in Diets for Sows and Growing Pigs

Abstract

Citrus pulp was evaluated in diets for pregnant and lactating sows in comparison with a cereal-based control diet and a sugar-beet pulp containing diet in Experiment 1. In a second experiment it was also evaluated in diets for growing pigs (44 to 98 kg) as a replacement for barley. In Experiment 1, 100 multiparous sows were assigned, at day 85 of pregnancy, to diets based on barley, wheat, meat-and-bone meal and soyabean meal with citrus pulp included at 0, 100 or 200 g/kg during pregnancy and 0, 75 or 150 g/kg during lactation. A fourth treatment contained sugar-beet pulp at 200 g/kg during pregnancy and 150 g/kg during lactation. Sows were offered the test diets from day 85 to farrowing, during lactation and during the next pregnancy and offered the control cereal-based diet in the second lactation. There was no significant effect of treatment on reproductive performance (numbers of pigs born or weaned), sow body weight or piglet weight at birth or at weaning. Voluntary feed intake in lactation and post weaning was not affected by inclusion of citrus or sugar-beet pulp in the diet (P > 0.05). In Experiment 2, 48 pigs (mean weight 44.3 kg, s.e. 0.6) were offered diets based on barley, wheat, meat-and-bone meal and soyabean meal with citrus pulp included at 0, 25, 50 or 100 g/kg. There was a negative linear effect of citrus pulp inclusion level on growth rate (P = 0.05), feed conversion efficiency (P < 0.05) and kill-out proportion (P < 0.05).
