THE PUMPKIN CREEK SITE: AN EARLY ARCHAIC CAMP ON THE SOUTHERN PLAINS BORDER

Abstract

The Pumpkin Creek site is located in Love country of south-central Oklahoma. Surface investigations, indicating the site is extensively exposed by erosion, have resulted in the recovery of a rather consistent cultural assemblage. The projectile points are predominantly lanceolate in outline and relate to Plains complexes that date around 7,000 to 9,500 years ago. The site is situated on the present eastern border of the Southern Plains, and assemblage analysis suggests the station was a temporary camp at which stone working of local gravels was the primary activity.
