Abstract

Ross Glen is a Besant tipi ring site in southeastern Alberta that was assessed by means of 246 m² of excavations coupled with detailed recording of the tipi ring features. Two of the 18 tipi rings were completely excavated along with seven of the 25 ancillary features, including hearths and boiling pits. These investigations yielded about 18,000 pieces of cultural material. A functional analysis of these materials serves as the foundation on which economic and social patterns at Ross Glen are interpreted. The site was apparently occupied for a few weeks during autumn around A.D. 480. Patterning revealed by spatial analysis of the tipi rings indicates that two groups occupied the site simultaneously. Furthermore, the lodges in each group were positioned based upon relationships between individuals and/or families. The size of the rings reflects the social status and/or wealth of the various residents within each group.
