Abstract

Lightning Spring and Red Fox are large, multi-component occupation sites in the Grand River drainage of North and South Dakota. Both include contemporaneous McKean phase components that yielded large artifact assemblages including numerous blanks and finished projectile points representing the projectile point manufacturing sequence utilized by the McKean phase occupants. Technological analyses of these specimens in conjunction with other significant similarities between artifacts and features from these sites demonstrate that the occupants of both sites were members of a local population. The definition of this local population is used as a basis for proposing further research that is processual in nature.
