Abstract

Throughout his reflection on methodology, which makes up the present study, the writer reminds us of the prerequisites for gaining knowledge of the essence of African art. According to him, it is necessary to start with the history of the artist himself, then the history of the work of art, before describing it and placing it in the technological, intellectual, political, social and economic context of the society or the individual that has shaped it. As for the problem of dating these works using modern techniques, often inaccessible to the Africans because of the high cost, the writer proposes a prudent recourse to the oral tradition, which he considers capable of providing the chronological elements in respect of levels of technology, morphology, semantics and function.
