Abstract

This article is based on fieldwork, which was conducted from November 1998 until the fall of 2001. The study was carried out at three different sites in Hamburg: within the social welfare agency known as "KIDS" (the German abbreviation for "children in the scene"), in the main hall of the central train station, and on the streets close to the station. The KIDS agency is located directly at the central station, and the persons with whom the agency is concerned range from 12 to 17 years in age. The article explores one question in particular: what relevance does this specific public place have for the youth. Do they repeat their early biographical experiences? The article focuses on the individual abilities of homeless girls and their specific developments and the limitations that have developed from their dependence upon institutional and basic social conditions. This article also provides an impression of their daily life in public.
