Abstract

A long tradition of doubt about the economic rationality of the British empire culminates in Davis and Huttenback's Mammon and the pursuit of empire. They argue that private returns to British investors in empire were often inferior to those offered elsewhere, and that defence costs were disproportionately high. Their derivation of private returns from company accounts is criticized in this article. It also shows that British defence costs compared well with those of France and Germany. The unequal distribution of defence costs within the empire reflected the requirements of its various units, and accords with an economic theory of alliances.
