Uses of the terms functional response and numerical response are reviewed and their weakness when applied to population dynamics discussed. The following new terms are proposed (for definitions see `Synopsis of New Terms' above): 1. Behavioural response. This may comprise either or both of the following: (a) an individual response; (b) an aggregative response. 2. Integeneration relationship. This may comprise, either singly or in combination: (a) a delayed relationship; (b) a superproportional or subproportional relationship. These are all expressed in terms of proportionate changes in host mortality caused by the enemy. It is hoped that this will make it easier to determine the effects of parasitism or predation on the host or prey population, and so be of help in the study of the population dynamics of interacting host-parasite or prey-predator populations.
