Abstract

The apólogos of Luis Martín-Santos explore the universal search for meaning in confrontation with the limitations of human knowledge. By combining the style of scientific writing with that of fable, Martín-Santos creates a series of short, didactic works which, while "moral," are not always "exemplary." This study analyses the structure of the apólogos in relation to the scientific and fabulist traditions and looks at the major themes which emerge, concluding that the apólogos can be seen as a synthesis of the author's fictional and scientific writings.
