Ten years after the Euphrates dam in north-east Syria was completed the Syrian government is planning another huge development project in the north-eastern part of the country: The Khabour River is to be used for the irrigation of another 150.000 ha. The construction works started in 1983 and will be finished at the beginning of the next decade. Since neither the natural nor the socio-economic conditions in the project area are favourable the Syrian government will be facing many difficulties.
