Abstract

The second part of this article analyses the continuities and innovations in Soviet ceremonial in the Post-Stalin period. After consideration of the Stalin `legacy' in ceremonial and the extent to which this has been preserved, I then consider the social and political pressures which resulted in the transformation of Soviet ceremonial in the 'sixties and the stages in which change came. Then the main innovations of this period are analysed: the new life-cycle ceremonies concerning growing up, family-making, and old age and death, and also the new differentiated group festivals. it is argued that the present elaborate system, now a major social institution in its own right, represents a compromise between a centralist regime trying to retain or extend its ideological control and the centrifugal pressures of pluralism, individualism and consumerism.
