Abstract

This article endeavours to support the concept of political economy as a legitimate model for analysing lowland South American societies while, at the some time, insisting on strict consistency between this model and the establishment of conclusions resulting from such an approach. It demonstrates from ethnographic evidence that Waiwai men's wealth and power are dependent upon the position of female labour and the crucial role of women's reproductive capacity. It confirms that women are wealth and are unequally distributed, but this conclusion follows not as an a priori consequence of the model, but from Waiwai cultural constructs.
