Striking a Bargain in Javanese Markets

Abstract

A critical feature of bazaar economies is that price and other economic information is differentially allocated and difficult to acquire. Bargaining is ubiquitous in such economies because it is the arena for information testing; prices in concluded negotiations directly reflect the quality of the information which the buyer has previously obtained. An analysis of bargaining in Javanese market places suggests that the widely used model of negotiated price fixing developed by Cassady requires untenable assumptions about the way in which market traders calculate prices and bids, and explains only the last stage in a three-stage bargaining process. An alternative model puts more emphasis on unequal access to price information and on differences between buyer's and seller's bargaining strategies to explain variations in the duration and intensity of haggling.
