Abstract

Recent discussions of the nature of ethnography point, first, to the need for more overt articulation of the method's defining features (which include more than intercultural dialogics), and secondly, to the need to formulate canons of ethnographic criticism that address validity as well as rhetoric and contribution to regional scholarships. Through consideration of `the ethnographic present' as a mode of writing ethnography, anthropological attitudes to history are identified, and the case for an ethnography of the present is advanced. On this basis, and attempts is made to define the range of fieldwork practice, and the recent historical vicissitudes, of `the ethnographic present' bestowed on today's anthropologists by their predecessors.
