Lophanthera hammelii sp. nov. is described, illustrated, and compared to the other four species of the genus. The distribution of all five species is mapped and discussed, and the chromosome number of L. lactescens (n = 6) is proposed as the likeliest base-number for the family Malpighiaceae.
